Hosting and Domain Name Information
You
need two things in addition to the files that make up your web site:
1) a host that provides a server where your site
files are stored and 2) a domain name or web address
that is the unique address of your home page. This is where visitors to your site
must go to view the pages that comprise your site.
Your internet service provider (the telephone or cable company that provides you
with access to the internet) usually provides you with space for a web site. If
you aren't already using it, this could be the host for your site. Otherwise,
you will have to purchase hosting service from your phone company, cable company,
or perhaps online. This is usually a monthly fee, which can be automatically billed
to your credit card. Prices start at under $10 per month, depending upon the type
of service.
If you use the web space provided by your internet service provider, the domain
name or web address for your site will be assigned to you. For instance, my service
provider is a cable modem company and the web site address for my home page is:
http://www.mycablecompany.com/my username/index.html.
You can also buy a domain name online, often at the same place you purchase hosting
service. Thus, you can better personalize your web address to read www.myname.com
(choosing from unsold names). You buy the domain name on a yearly basis
(the more years you purchase, the lower the yearly price). Two online sources
are www.dotster.com and www.godaddy.com.
Costs for domain names vary from about $10 to $40.
As an example, I purchased a domain name online for $9 for one year and hosted
it for $6 per month, for a total yearly cost of $81. But, this is a very basic
site with no database features, e-commerce, and no huge storage requirements.
This cost should be considered an absolute minimum, which will probably
increase as prices are raised.
